Genitourinary Medicine means:

Genitourinary Medicine, also known as (GUM) in short, deals with the investigation as well as the management of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Doctors in genitourinary medicine (GUM) diagnose and treat sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV. Sexually transmitted diseases and infections (STDs or STIs) are infections that can only (or mostly) be passed on to another person when having sex, be it anal, oral or vaginal sex. There are different types of STDs, from very benign to malignant and harmful ones.
Scope of work with GUM:
The major role of GUM physicians or practitioner is the prevention, detection, management and control of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This practitioner or physicians can also manage a number of non-infectious genital problems such as genital or vaginal discharge, irritation and dermatoses (affecting the skin).

We provide HIV care involves:

• the management of complex antiretroviral treatments (drugs used to slow down the spread of the particular disease)
• a knowledge of drug interactions (drug interaction may cause emergency medical condition)
• understanding antiretroviral drug resistance patterns, side effects by the treatment and co-infections (where a patient is infected by more than one virus and turn into a more comparatively serious condition)

In recent years, the specialty has expanded into other areas of sexual health, including the provision of contraception, and the management of sexual dysfunction and few more.

Patients are able to self-refer or be referred by:

• primary careservices such as general practitioners and family planning and youth clinics
• other hospital specialties such as pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, urology, emergency units, ophthalmology, general medicine
• schools, social services and the police
